Johann Sidial, EAASI Young Ambassador

The European Association of Aerial Surveying Industries (EAASI) is excited to introduce our second Young Ambassador.

Johann Sidial

Team Leader, Photogrammetry, BSF Swissphoto

Johann joined BSF Swissphoto in January 2023, where he is now Team Leader of Photogrammetry. In this role, he manages large-scale photogrammetry projects across Europe, continuously optimizing all steps in the photogrammetry workflow from image processing to orthophoto and mesh production.

Johann pursued his education in geosciences, completing a BSc in Geology with honors at the University of the West Indies, Mona, Jamaica, and subsequently earning an MSc in Geoinformatics from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, Trinidad. He also has an avid interest in the computer sciences obtaining various certifications in programming, cloud computing, and big data analytics.

Following his academic endeavors, Johann embarked on a career path that encompassed both academia and government service. He was the lead GIS Officer at the Ministry of Spatial Planning, Public Housing, Infrastructure, and Environment (VROMI) in Philipsburg, St. Maarten. In this capacity, he implemented the use of ArcGIS Enterprise across the organization and conducted various spatial analysis projects ranging from flood hazard modelling to wastewater network mapping. Johann also led various data acquisition projects, collaborating with FUGRO and the World Bank for an island-wide topographic and bathymetric imagery and LiDAR survey. He also introduced various field mapping technologies to the disaster management agency such as mobile 360 image capture, ArcGIS FieldMaps, and UAV visible and thermal mapping.

Johann also worked as a Lecturer in the Liberal Arts Department at the University of Saint Martin, Philipsburg, St. Maarten, where he organized and implemented the first GIS course, contributing to the advancement of geospatial education on the island.

"Advancements in our sector occur at such a rapid pace and I truly enjoy learning and applying new and innovative techniques to solve problems or optimize an existing process. For me, the journey of learning never stops, and I embrace it always", shares Johann.

About the EAASI Young Ambassadors

The program aims to showcase the diverse and dynamic careers within the aerial surveying industry while empowering young professionals to become ambassadors for their field. Selected from talented individuals working within EAASI member companies, our Young Ambassadors will play a vital role in inspiring and guiding future professionals in the industry. The program's inaugural ambassadors, Alice Hilton from Bluesky International and Johann Sidial from BSF Swissphoto, exemplify the variety of roles and backgrounds found in modern geospatial careers

As a Young Ambassador, participants will have the opportunity to share their experiences and insights about working in aerial surveying. They will engage with potential future professionals at industry events, participate in informative video interviews providing insights into various aspects of the industry, and visit schools and universities to inspire a passion for STEM, particularly among young women.
